Join the Birdwatching Community: Engage with Nature and Science
As the holiday season draws near, so does a special opportunity to connect with nature and contribute to something meaningful. From December 14 to January 5, the National Audubon Society invites everyone, from seasoned birdwatchers to curious novices, to participate in the 126th annual Christmas Bird Count. This long-standing event, which spans the Western Hemisphere, is more than just a count; it’s a tradition that plays a vital role in conserving bird populations and their habitats.
What is the Christmas Bird Count?
The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 and has evolved into the world’s longest-running community science project. In over 2,800 designated count circles—from Canada to Chile and beyond—participants will observe, identify, and record the birds they see or hear. This data not only helps build a comprehensive picture of bird populations but also assists scientists in understanding how environmental changes, particularly climate change, are impacting our feathered friends.
Why Your Participation Matters
Your involvement in the Christmas Bird Count can significantly influence conservation efforts. As Dr. Ben Haywood, Audon’s director of community science, emphasizes, “Adding to such a long-term dataset helps conservation scientists better understand the state of the birds.” Over decades, these counts have provided data for over 300 peer-reviewed studies, showing alarming trends, including a nearly three billion decline in North American bird populations since 1970.
This year, participants can expect to encounter a greater variety of birds than ever, as even “late lingerers” like the Black-and-white Warbler have chosen to stay in the U.S. due to milder winter temperatures. Such sightings make it an exciting time to join in and get involved.
Be a Part of History
Each count circle is organized under the guidance of compilers who help coordinate the efforts of volunteers. With a 15-mile-wide range, each circle offers a unique experience for participants. Whether you're an expert birder or completely new to the activity, your contribution helps fill an essential role in the bird conservation narrative.
Bird Watching for Everyone!
What’s more, anyone—regardless of age or experience—can join. Programs are designed to accommodate people of all skill levels. As children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, it’s a great way for families to bond over a shared love for nature. Participating in the Christmas Bird Count can foster a deeper appreciation for our planet and the myriad species that inhabit it. It can also create lasting memories that impact our relationship with the environment.
Join Us This Winter
This year, make a resolution not just for yourself but for birds everywhere. Whether you’re out in the field tallying birds or documenting species from your own backyard, every bird you count is one step towards better understanding how to protect our avian friends. Sign up is available through the Audubon Society’s dedicated platforms, and they will send updates and results throughout the counting period to keep you engaged and informed.
Protecting Our Feathered Friends Together
The data collected from the Christmas Bird Count not only helps us today but also contributes to a brighter future for birds worldwide. With escalating risks of extinction looming for many species, the count emphasizes the importance of conservation as we observe shifting bird populations in the face of climate change.
As we prepare for this beloved annual event, think about how a few hours spent counting birds could make a difference. Will you join this effort and become a vital part of the community that cares for our birds? Don’t miss your chance—get involved today!
