Discovering Nature at the Platte River Safari Camps
This summer, the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary introduced curious young minds to the vibrant ecosystems of the Platte River Valley through their engaging Safari Camps. Designed for students in second through fifth grade, these camps provided a unique opportunity for hands-on learning, allowing children to connect with nature in focused and impactful ways.
Enriching Experiences Await
Limited to half-day sessions to enhance the learning experience, this year's camp was more intimate, enabling focused attention on the participants. Over three weeks, twenty-six campers immersed themselves in the richness of wetlands, prairies, and the Platte River. Each day was crafted to include sensory-rich experiences that cultivated both curiosity and environmental awareness.
Each Day Unfolded with New Adventures
On the first day, campers met the feathered residents of the Platte River Valley, discovering why birds migrate through Nebraska and how to use binoculars. Their creativity showed as they dressed up as birds and personalized nature journals for future observations. Day two revolved around wetland exploration, where campers dipped nets into the waters revealing hidden lives of macroinvertebrates, turning muddy adventures into unforgettable learning moments.
Learning from the Prairie
Day three took the campers into the prairies, where they delved into the difference between grasses and forbs. Armed with jeweler’s loupes and sweep nets, they explored plant and insect life and created artwork inspired by their findings. This blend of science and creativity encourages kids to appreciate the delicate balance of nature.
Connecting to the River
On the final camp day, the focus shifted to the Platte River itself. Campers caught crawdads and small fish, building tiny dams to visualize the impact of human activity on river ecosystems. With snorkels, they watched the underwater world come alive, all while enjoying playful moments that fostered a sense of joy and respect for the environment.
Building Lifelong Connections
Rowe Sanctuary's Safari Camps aim to immerse children in the natural world, sparking curiosity, developing understanding, and fostering lifelong connections. It’s much more than just a camp; it’s about nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, scientists, and storytellers.
Looking to the Future
As the camp reflects on this successful summer, it eagerly anticipates expanding its offerings for future campers. Young explorers will continue to find a place where they can learn about and connect deeply with the environment around them.
